What is Season of Creation?

The Season of Creation ( SOC) is the annual Christian celebration to pray and respond together to the cry of Creation: the ecumenical family around the world unites to listen and care for our common home, the Oikos of God.

The Season “Celebration” begins 1 September, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends 4 October, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations.

The Theme for 2023

“Let Justice and Peace Flow” is the theme of this year’s ecumenical SOC , inspired by the words of the prophet Amos: “Let justice flow on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (5:24).

We are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice, and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity.

‘Transforming our perception needs us to see the bigger picture from the “Me, Myself and I” to “You and We”; from “obstacles” to “opportunities”; from “too much work” to “what more must be done”; and from “no one’s watching” to “even if no one’s watching.”

The launching of SOC was celebrated at Risen Christ Church Air Itam, Penang on 1st September 2023 with paraliturgy followed by Mass. During the paraliturgy there was reflection on the theme “Let Justice and Peace Flow” by Friar Esmond Chua, the parish priest of Risen Christ Church. The parishioners also participated in a short activity as a sign of commitment to care for creation by filling claypot cups with water and pouring it into an earthen jar. This was followed by Mass celebrated by Friar Esmond Chua, Fr Joachim Roberts and Friar Crispus.
