Poverty

Poverty is more than a lack of money; it is a profound suffering of the body, mind, and spirit.

In our society, we see this reality every day: children starved of love and acceptance due to neglect; women facing both emotional and financial hardship in the absence of their husbands; the elderly left alone, longing for connection and a listening ear.

We see the sick and the poor struggling to put food on the table, people with disabilities fighting to make a living, and those released from prison struggling to find work and break the cycle of crime. These are just a few examples of the realities unfolding in our own neighborhoods.

Our Intervention

Inspired by the Gospel and guided by Catholic Social Teaching, Parish Caritas groups are constantly discerning how God is calling the Church to respond. In our work, Caritas focuses on addressing poverty holistically, materially, psychologically and spiritually. We understand that a homeless person needs not only food but also friendship; a child lacking family love requires patient accompaniment; and a sick person needs both medical care and mental support.

Our parishes are situated in diverse locations, addressing a wide variety of needs. Here is a glimpse of a vital work being done by Caritas at the parish level:

In Sungai Petani, Caritas Church of Christ The King reaches out to families in need by providing rations, supporting children's education, and accompanying the sick, often working hand-in-hand with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Recognizing the growing number of homeless individuals wandering the town, the team collaborated with their parish priest to establish a soup kitchen and a mobile volunteer outreach. Every Saturday, volunteers from all walks of life come together to cook and deliver food packs to people on the streets and lonely residents in low-cost apartments.

Through this mission, they have discovered many families struggling with substance abuse, and the team is now actively discerning a pastoral response.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Caritas Cathedral of the Holy Spirit has run a dedicated food bank project in Penang. The volunteers focus on reaching out to homebound elderly, vulnerable children, and underprivileged families.

Every month, Parish Caritas calls for donations and mobilizes volunteers to pack and deliver essential aid. Those who step into the lives of the marginalized are often deeply touched by these encounters, fueling the continued growth of their mission. Today, they even deliver food to areas well beyond Penang Island as the need arises.

Situated in a developing area with a mix of rural and urban poor, Caritas Church of the Holy Name of Mary, Permatang Tinggi has identified many critical needs.

They serve the sick who require medical assistance but cannot afford it, single mothers with bedridden children and no support system, and elderly individuals left alone in need of accompaniment. Parish Caritas mobilizes dedicated volunteers to visit these homes and provide direct, relational assistance.

Over time, through these consistent outreaches and services, the Church is building deep, trusting relationships with the surrounding neighborhood.

Education

Caritas Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ipoh has a long history of reaching out to poor families.

To help break the generational cycle of poverty, Parish Caritas established a free tuition center aimed at providing marginalized children with a safe, supportive environment to learn. They mobilize volunteers to teach, prepare lunches, and provide transportation to and from the center.

This education program has helped countless children improve academically and gain confidence. Some have even graduated from university and entered the workforce, fully empowered to help their families rise out of poverty.

Case Management and Addiction Recovery Support

Caritas Penang collaborates closely with the Penang Diocesan Prison Ministry and dedicated social workers to support individuals struggling with addiction who desire to change their lives, as well as their families who desperately need our support.

Our hands-on work includes providing personalized case management, pastoral accompaniment, and direct referrals to trusted rehabilitation centers and support groups.

Because we understand the profound complexities of addiction, we actively equip our volunteers through knowledge sharing, best practices, formation workshops, and awareness sessions so they can learn from one another and serve with resilience and deep compassion.
