Christ the King Church, Sungai Petani

Under the umbrella of the Church of Christ the King (CTK) in Sungai Petani, multiple ministries seamlessly unite to serve the poor and marginalized. Working hand-in-hand with the long-established Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), Caritas CTK serves as a vibrant hub of compassion, extending its reach to migrants, refugees, students, and inmates across the town.

The story of Caritas Kitchen

The Project - Caritas Kitchen

Sungai Petani faces complex urban challenges, including a high number of homeless individuals, neglected children, isolated retirees living in poverty, struggling single mothers, and those battling addiction. To address these urgent needs, the parish launched Caritas Kitchen, a soup kitchen that distributes hot meals every Saturday, serving as a profound platform for volunteers to witness to and serve the poorest in their town.

The project was born from a direct response to the suffering on the streets. “When I came to Sungai Petani, I saw people who were homeless and poor on the streets,” shares Rev. Fr. Victor Louis. “Inspired by the Lighthouse in Penang and soup kitchens around the world, I initiated the Caritas Kitchen project. I intended to feed people who did not know where their next meal was coming from. My parishioners enthusiastically accepted the idea and started working on it.”

Seeing Through the Eyes of Jesus

The mission is not without its hurdles. The team has faced criticism from some who argue that feeding the homeless encourages addiction or a lifestyle of poverty. However, the parish remains steadfast. As the team reflects: “If we were to judge by the eyes of the world, maybe we would have given up. But we choose to see through the eyes of Jesus, judge like Jesus, and act like Jesus.”

Testimonies from their volunteers

Today, Caritas Kitchen draws a diverse group of volunteers, spanning different faiths, all united by a desire to serve:

Yesudass, Volunteer Cook

“At least one day a week, I’m able to give them hope by cooking healthy food. It gives me joy to serve the poorest of the poor.”

“I’m a retiree, and I didn’t want to waste my time. I listen to God and act. I find joy in serving the Lord through this project.”

“Being retired military personnel, I yearn to continue serving. Seeing people in need of basic food moves my heart, so I go out looking for those in desperate situations to offer whatever I can.”

“Volunteers come forward with passion to spread love by cooking for unknown people who are hungry.”

Transformed by Hope

The ultimate goal of Caritas Kitchen goes beyond filling stomachs; it is about making people feel seen, heard, and deeply loved by God. By becoming the literal answer to the prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread,"the parish hopes to spark lasting transformation.

Their Structure

Caritas CTK does not operate in isolation. They collaborate closely with the diocese, government authorities, and NGOs to provide comprehensive social services regardless of race or religion:

Education Ministry

Supports underprivileged students, with volunteer teachers offering free tuition to both local and foreign children.

Recognizing that migrants and refugees (including many who fled Myanmar) have limited access to healthcare, this ministry partners with doctors and medical students to run mobile clinics.

Members visit prisoners and juvenile inmates weekly to proclaim the Good News and support their rehabilitation.

Volunteers regularly visit the marginalized to listen, offer friendship, and connect them with vital social services and NGOs.
