Caritas Diocese of Penang in collaboration with Tzu Chi Merits Society Penang organized a cleanup event on Saturday 25th April 2023 as a Lenten project and in line with the Lenten theme “Renew our hearts to Care” – Care for our common home.
The event started at 7.30am at Pantai Seagate, Bayan Lepas with 60 people participating from all walks of life. The briefing was given by a Tzu Chi member and the participants were divided into groups to embark on the cleanup at different points along Pantai Seagate.
At the end of the cleanup, the trash collected were segregated and about 34.7 kg of recyclable and 302.5 kg of non-recyclable items mainly plastic waste were collected. The recyclable items were sent to the Tzu Chi Environment Protection Education Center, Penang.
This simple action of picking up trash brought together people from diverse background who were united in one common goal, to keep the environment clean. It was a positive collaboration, the spirit of unity and most importantly, getting something done for the planet we call our common home. Caritas Diocese of Penang plans to organize more environmental care events to raise awareness on proper waste management that would help to reduce pollution and protect the environment.
