Urban poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, refugee in trouble

Under the umbrella of Caritas Church of Christ The King, Sungai Petani (Caritas CTK), a few ministries come together to complement each other to serve the poor and marginalized.

Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP) has a long history of serving the poor, most of the SSVP members are also part of Caritas mission. Caritas kitchen was set up to address the homeless issue in Sungai Petani, it is also a platform for volunteers to witness and serve the poorest in the town. Migrant ministry continues to take care of the well-being of the migrant communities. Education ministry take care of the educational needs among the underprivileged students. Medical ministry works with the university to host medical camps for the poor. Prison ministry reaches out to the prisoners in the prison. Many refugees escaped Myanmar lived here, the church is providing humanitarian support to the suffering ones.

These ministries work hand-in-hand to help the least of the brothers and sisters in need. 

Social Services

Sungai Petani has a relatively high number of homeless people, children being neglected, lonely retirees living in poverty, single mother struggle to met ends meet, and those who addicted to drugs and alcohol, these are the main problems that Caritas kitchen is trying to address.

Caritas CTK works closely with other parishes in the diocese, government authorities and NGOs to provide social services for the poor and marginalised, regardless of their race and religion.

Education

Education ministry supports students from the underprivileged families. Volunteer teachers give free tuition to help both local and foreigner students.

Medical

Migrants and refugees have limited access to healthcare, thus medical ministry works with the doctors and students from med school to run mobile clinic.

Welfare

Volunteers visit the poor and marginalised regularly to listen to their problems, befriend with them and refer them to social services or NGOs.

Food

Caritas kitchen is a platform for volunteer to cook and serve hot meal for the homeless. Volunteers distribute food every Saturday.

Spiritual

Members from the prison ministry visit the prisoner and juvenile every week to proclaim the Good News and help inmates to turn away from their wrongdoings.

The Structure of Caritas CTK

Church of Christ The King, Sungai Petani has a very vigour migrant ministry and members from the Society of St Vincent de Paul who already serving the poor and needy. In 2022, Caritas was set up as an umbrella to bring all social outreach ministries together. Volunteers from various ministries meet once a month to discuss the problems and needs of the people they are serving.
